Flags for Endangered Species explores the relationship between humanity and nature, focusing on animal species that have no legal representation and are therefore threatened with extinction as a result of human activity — from industrialization to the impact of modern technology and other forms of exploitation of nature.
David Nez created flags for endangered animal species, as though granting them a form of citizenship or political identity. Since a flag symbolizes a state, and a state provides legal protection to its citizens, the work raises the question of whether the animal or natural kingdom might also be given a voice and the right to be protected.
