VILHARIA, Slovenia 2026

Kvet Nguyễn is a visual artist and photographer whose work focuses on the issues of migration, identity, and belonging within the post-socialist space. Through her own personal and family history — in particular her parents’ experience of immigrating from Vietnam to Slovakia — she touches on the subjects of collective memory, history, and the individual’s place in contemporary society.

Reframing Possibilities I and III appear, at first glance, to be classic photographic portraits, but they conceal a more complex exploration of the relationship between body, space, and identity. The works were created during the COVID-19 pandemic, when restricted movement forced the artist to walk the same routes over and over again. During these walks, she collected various random materials, which she later used in creating the works.
In her portraits, she uncovers not only the image of the body, but also the relationship between what something is and how it is presented. Photography becomes her space, one in which the boundary between reality and its representation is constantly shifting.
